Each member of Sovereign's team was specifically recruited for their experience as well as their complementary technical, language and interpersonal skills.
Division President, Sovereign Risk Insurance Ltd.
Price was responsible for the formation of Sovereign in 1997 and was the company's first employee. Prior to forming Sovereign, Price was Vice President and Director of Guy Carpenter & Company's (a Marsh & McLennan subsidiary) Asia-Pacific Group, specializing in political risk insurance and reinsurance in China and Taiwan. Price was also Director of Political Risk Services at the Aon Corporation prior to joining Guy Carpenter. In this position, he specialized in country risk assessment and the design of political risk insurance programs for multinationals investing in emerging markets.
Price has an MA in China Studies and International Relations from the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) in Washington, D.C., a BSc in Political Science from Colorado College, and two language degrees in Mandarin Chinese from the Royal Hong Kong Language Institute and from National Taiwan University in Taipei. Price is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations in New York.
Senior Vice President & Chief Operating Officer
Natalie joined Sovereign as a Research Analyst in 2001 and quickly transitioned to underwriting with responsibility for a number of Sovereign’s key clients. Throughout her time at Sovereign, Natalie has gained experience underwriting both political and non-payment risks for a diverse group of Sovereign’s client base, including international commercial and investment banks, corporates, exporters, traders, multilaterals, export credit agencies and private equity investors. She was promoted to Senior Vice President in 2015, and since then she has been working with Sovereign’s President in all aspects of the company’s management, including strategic planning and forecasting, business development and marketing, client and broker relationships, claims, the formulation and implementation of underwriting strategies, as well as reinsurance procurement.
Prior to joining Sovereign, Natalie worked at the Bank of Bermuda (now HSBC) in Bermuda, Luxembourg, and New York where she managed top client relationships for the Global Fund Services Division. Natalie has a BA in History from Brown University in Rhode Island, USA and speaks French.
Political Risk Manager
Sophie joined the Sovereign team in Bermuda in October 2008 as an underwriter responsible for a portfolio of trading and banking clients. She moved to the UK in January 2013, the first Sovereign team member to be based in London, joining Chubb Bermuda’s International Division as Political Risk Manager. In addition to representing Sovereign in the London market at client, broker and other marketing meetings and events, Sophie continues to underwrite transactions for a number of longstanding Sovereign clients, with a focus on trading companies and commercial banks active in the trade, export finance and project finance areas. She also provides internal legal, regulatory, compliance and underwriting support, including to her team members in London, Matthew Rego and Richard Voaden.
Sophie came to Sovereign from a 13-year career in banking, including seven years as a Senior Manager in Fortis Bank's Global Export and Project Finance group in Brussels. In this role, Sophie was involved in the structuring of project finance and buyer credit transactions in emerging markets with the participation of Multilateral Development Banks, Export Credit Agencies and the private political risk insurance market. During this time, she had a key role in developing Fortis Bank’s relationship with the private insurance market and its use of the PRI product.
Sophie has a Law Degree and a Postgraduate Degree in International Relations from the University of Leuven in Belgium, as well as a Masters of Law Degree from the University of London, King's College. She is fluent in Dutch, English and French Political Risk Manager
Vice President & Underwriter
Matthew is responsible for handling a number of Sovereign’s key banking relationships as well as developing new business and prospective clients, with a specific focus on private equity and project finance. He has significant experience working with both the political risk and non-payment products in cooperation with a diverse set of Sovereign’s clients and brokers. In addition to his underwriting responsibilities, Matthew actively represents Sovereign at marketing meetings and events.
Matthew joined Sovereign in 2012, starting as our assistant underwriter and country analyst in Bermuda before gaining underwriting authority in 2015. He currently works alongside Sophie Demeyer and Richard Voaden in London.
Matthew graduated from James Madison University, Virginia in 2012 with a degree in International Relations and he also holds a graduate certificate in Trade Finance from Middlesex University, London.
Senior Vice President & Chief Underwriting Officer
Christina is responsible for all aspects of Sovereign's transactional underwriting, with particular focus on capital markets and financial institution business. Christina is also relationship manager for a number of Sovereign's ECA and Multilateral Agency clients. Christina has worked in the political risk field for more than 30 years. Christina is the elected Vice President of the Berne Union (the International Union of Credit & International Insurers), and has served on its board since 2014. She is also an Alternate Director of the African Trade Indemnity Agency (ATI).
Prior to joining Sovereign, she was with the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA) for 11 years. She joined MIGA as one of its first employees in 1988 and worked in several capacities, including Regional Manager for Asia and Latin America and most recently as Manager for Syndications and Business Development, responsible for starting the Agency’s re- and co-insurance activities. Prior to MIGA, Christina worked as a political risk insurance broker in the Bank of America's Global Trade Finance Department in New York and as Manager in the Political Risk Department at AB Max Matthiessen in Stockholm, Sweden. Christina has a degree in international business from Stockholm School of Economics and Business Administration and an MBA in finance from New York University.
Barker C. Keith
General Counsel & Senior Political Risk Underwriter
Barker joined Sovereign in 2002 and is responsible for all aspects of Sovereign's legal work. Additionally, he manages a number of underwriting relationships with key clients.
Barker joined Sovereign from Shearman & Sterling where he practiced corporate and securities law in their New York, Hong Kong and Abu Dhabi offices. While at Shearman & Sterling, Barker represented U.S. and foreign corporations and financial institutions in a variety of cross-border project finance, capital markets and restructuring transactions. Prior to becoming an attorney, Barker was an active duty officer in the U.S. Army.
Barker received his B.A. in International Studies from American University, a M.A. in International Relations from Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, a J.D. from Syracuse University College of Law and a Master of Laws (in Taxation) from New York University School of Law. Barker is licensed to practice law in New York, England and Wales. Barker grew up in Venezuela and speaks fluent Spanish.
John G. Henderson
Vice President & Counsel
John joined Sovereign’s Bermuda-based team in late 2016. He has over 25 years of experience in political risk insurance and cross-border finance, most recently at the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA), the political risk and credit insurance arm of the World Bank. He is a seasoned negotiator with well-developed credit skills, having represented lenders and political risk insurers on dozens of large restructurings, workouts, and bankruptcies. He has expertise structuring, negotiating, drafting and closing complex credit and political risk cover for large commercial banks and private equity firms.
John began his career in the Office of the General Counsel at the Export-Import Bank of the United States working on cross-border aircraft and project finance transactions. After six years, he was named an Assistant General Counsel, and in 1998 he moved into a commercial role serving as Managing Director for US Ex-Im Bank’s $7 billion portfolio of restructurings and workouts in Southeast Asia following the Asian financial crisis.
In 2000, John accepted a partnership at a Washington, D.C. law firm representing finance companies, commercial banks, and international political risk insurers on a variety of export finance, ship finance and syndicated debt financings. In 2006 he joined Oxford Finance LLC, a specialty finance company, as Vice President & General Counsel.
John graduated from Lake Forest College with a B.A. in political science and obtained his J.D. from the Washington College of Law at American University in Washington, D.C. He is admitted to practice in Washington, D.C. and the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Vice President & Underwriter
Allison joined Sovereign in August 2008. She assists the underwriting and legal teams with country research and analysis; and manages our global portfolio and country exposures.
Before joining Sovereign, Allison worked for four years at Security Capital Assurance (SCA) in their Investor Relations Department. The Department assisted SCA’s new business department by helping build out SCA’s fixed income investor platform both domestically and internationally.
Vice President, Political Risk Underwriter
Yue joined Sovereign in 2019 and is based in Bermuda. He is responsible for the underwriting of political risk and sovereign credit transactions for a number of Sovereign’s key clients. Yue also plays an active role in our global political and macroeconomic risk research as well as portfolio management efforts. In addition, Yue holds marketing and business development responsibilities in Europe and Asia Pacific, and leads our China-related business initiatives.
Before joining Sovereign, Yue had 13 years of underwriting and risk management experience in political risk and credit insurance. Most recently, Yue served as Chief Economist of QBE Global Credit and Surety. Prior to that, he was Vice President and Deputy Head of Risk for the Political Risk, Credit & Bonds group at XL Catlin (now AXA XL). Yue holds a B.A. in Economics and Political Science from the University of Michigan and a M.B.A. from New York University. He speaks fluent Chinese and Spanish.
Helen is the controller for Sovereign, with responsibility for all financial reporting requirements; receivables and payables; budgeting and forecasting; and personnel management.
Before joining Sovereign, Helen was employed by ACE Bermuda Insurance Ltd for over seven years, where she was a Vice President in the Accounts department. Prior to ACE, she was a supervisor at Ernst and Young where she was responsible for a large portfolio of insurance and investment clients.
Helen is a Chartered Professional Accountant and is a member of the Chartered Professional Accountants of Bermuda.
Senior Analyst & Underwriter
Richard is responsible for underwriting transactions for both new and established clients, with a focus on trade finance and portfolio business. In addition to his underwriting responsibilities, Richard assists the Division President with managing, researching and reporting on Sovereign’s exposures and counterparty limits.
Richard joined Sovereign in 2014 after graduating with a first-class degree in Political Science from the University of Birmingham, England. He has a postgraduate certificate in Project Finance from Middlesex University and a master’s degree in Finance and Economic Policy from SOAS, University of London.
He currently works alongside Matthew Rego and Sophie Demeyer in London.
Melanie has returned to Sovereign after living in Canada for 5 years. She formerly worked as Sovereign’s Office Manager and has now taken the position of Assistant Underwriter. Her main responsibilities are to assist the underwriting, accounting and legal teams with administrative support.
Prior to Sovereign, she worked for several years as an Administrative Manager for Texaco Inc. She also has a strong background in the Health & Fitness field and has represented Bermuda in prestigious cycling events; including the female’s Tour de France, Commonwealth Games, and World B Cycling Championships.
Debbie joined the Sovereign team as Office Assistant in June 2018 and is responsible for providing support to the underwriting and legal teams.
Prior to joining Sovereign, Debbie worked in Chubb’s Human Resources department as Benefits & Learning Administrator for 6 years. In her position in HR, Debbie was responsible for providing support to the Compensation & Benefits team which included benefits administration, recording and tracking company business travel, providing pension support, assisting with year-end tax filings, and managing internal wellness initiatives. As Learning & Development administrator, she was also responsible for managing all administrative components of Chubb’s summer internship program, arranging internal and external training/education programs for employees, and also served as regional administrator for Chubb’s Talent Portal.
Vice President, Controller
Alexandria, the controller for Sovereign, joined in August 2020. Her role includes, but not limited to, the preparation of quarterly management accounts, monthly accounting functions, forecasting and budgeting, audit requests and review of reconciliations.
Before joining Sovereign, Alexandria worked at Zurich Insurance Company, where she worked as a Senior Account Manager. Prior to Zurich she worked at PricewaterhouseCoopers.
Alexandria graduated from the University of Western Ontario with a bachelor’s in Business Administration and Management. Alexandria then obtained her Chartered Professional Accountant designation and is a member of the Chartered Professional Accountants of Bermuda.
Megan joined Sovereign in 2020. She assists the underwriting and legal teams with country research and political risk analysis. Megan oversees the tracking of Sovereign’s obligor and country exposures and maintains important database tools used to make underwriting decisions. In addition, she manages Sovereign’s Global Portfolio and Country Exposure Profiles.
Megan has a M.A. in International Development and Political Science and a B.A. in International Development Studies from the University of Guelph in Canada. During her studies she conducted field work and research in Latin America and East Africa.
